Part restaurant, part Grimm's Fairy Tale setting, Arume is an unassuming-looking eatery tucked away in Raval.
It’s low beams and winding passageways give way to sloping ceilings and higgledy-piggledy staircases, while eerie family photos and a crackling TV fire confirm that we seem to have stumbled into Grandmother’s House.
And with washing still strung out to dry, and giant cutlery in disarray across the walls (all the better to eat you with?) it’s clear that Granny wasn’t really expecting guests.
Luckily for her, the staff have it covered, friendly not formal, with the self professed Filipino Marlon Brando leading the pack with his bad jokes and menu know-how.

We start with the much hyped blackberry mojitos (you’ve got to have a sweet tooth, but yes they are delicious) before moving on to some equally quaffable Galician wine.
The menu is pretty concise, though I do think you have to choose fairly carefully, as there are some definite stars of the show.
Our starters are all pretty ace, including the scallops, Galician cockles and mouth melting fish tempura, while the ‘Tapas of the Year’ winner of crispy octopus is deservedly something to shout about.
And what the fish and the lamb mains may lack (a little dry, no real pazazz), is made up for by the duck paella and Iberian pork. These dishes are hearty and comforting, staying true to flavours both Galician and Catalan.
Arume delivers traditional, wholesome ingredients with fancy, fine dining touches in a cosy atmosphere. Just make sure you steer clear of the Big Bad Wolf. END
