Everyone wants to be able to name drop ‘that time I ate scorpion.’
Well, head to Llamber, and you’ll be in luck.
The high ceilinged space, located on a wide street near Parc Ciutadella, is a patchwork of shabby chic accessories, with the contrasting rough of exposed brick and smooth of the brass beer taps giving the whole place a glam, achingly modern vibe.
It’s the kind of place where it’s nice to get a bit dressed up, but the vibe is still hipster-esque enough to be relaxed.
The bar area at the front is buzzing when we arrive, with an oversized sunglasses crowd sipping cocktails alongside suited and booted boys.
We’re seated in the more formal area at the back, and quickly order a couple of pica-pica dishes.
The service is impeccable, perhaps to the point where it’s a little too formal for the more casual atmosphere, but nonetheless leaves us wanting for nothing.
Unlike lots of tapas places, the dishes don’t all arrive at once in a weird mash of hot, cold and carb on carb. Each dish is perfectly timed and is a true spectacle in itself.
The tempura shrimp and asparagus skewers finger point their way straight out of Saturday Night Fever, while the black rice paella is hand mixed at our table, in a glossy swirl of colourful sauces.
The beetroot carpaccio with king prawns is worth mentioning just for it’s sheer beauty, while the
black pudding with baby squid is sweet, salty and totally delicious.
And of course I have to mention the scorpion fish terrine, which, despite being the headline grabber, is actually surprisingly tame - meaning that even the most cautious of diners can leave having tried it.
Llamber is about more than just food, it’s the whole experience of the eating that really makes it stand out. You get fine dining but without all the fancy-schmancy that usually goes with it.
And it’s clearly a place that knows how to please, as people are still arriving as we leave at 11pm - the kitchen is open till 12.30am - making it a great late night option too.
