Yes. We’ve moved to Spain. We get it. But can we please try something other than tapas now?

And this weekend, dear reader, we did.

Lam Thai Street Food is a no-frills eatery on Gran Via.

An offshoot of the highly rated Bangkok Cafe in Les Corts, the place is small, simple and less refined than its big brother.

I'm here on a Friday night, and am the first person in the place at 9pm. I’m grateful once it fills up, as the buzz of chatter brings the place to life and I’m distracted from the incongruous, Miley Cyrus soundtrack overhead.

But what the space slightly lacks in personality, is more than made up for by the food.

The plastic menus make me happy with their Thai authenticity, as do the ice cold Singha beers.

Dishes range from classic to unheard of, while the spice level of each can be adjusted, meaning that even the bravest of tongue-tinglers can leave satisfied.

Our Vietnamese spring rolls arrive first. For me, texture trumps taste any day, and these rolls are cruuuunchy. This, plus their fabulous peanut and coriander dipping sauce, make them a happy and unexpected change from the typical rice paper roll.

Our mains are equally as good. We share veggie Pad Thai, a gingery red curry, and a yellow curried coconut dish topped with fried noodles - again, top marks for texture.

LAM satisfies a craving for something cheap, chilled-out and tasty.

It’s small though, so the only real effort is calling ahead to reserve a table.
